Upon my proposition of fire as an element of heresy, Jesús has also led me to think of fire as an element of illumination, of combustion that is necessary to see what surrounds us. And so, I am tempted to think of each canvas as a flame that helps us see where we stand, without considering the redundancy that what we see (or sense) in each canvas has to do with fire. One of the wonders of painting is precisely this: it compels us to interact with different planes, both internal and external to ourselves.
These canvases are not mere representations of an element, much less just a playful exercise by the artist. But the importance of these paintings lies precisely in the fact that once the sorcerer pronounces the spell, the artist paints a canvas, they no longer belong to him; they become entities in the world that, depending on the moment and context, will speak of something specific, yet contain the entire truth and language of the species. That is painting, and that is the function of art.
